Wealth in Qi Men Dun Jia: Which Gate to Read, and How

For money questions, Qi Men Dun Jia reads the Life Gate first. Learn the order: find the Life Gate and your Day Stem palace, compare the two, check the gate's strength, Void, pressure and tomb marks, and add the Wu stem when capital is at stake. With a worked chart.

In brief

For money, read the Life Gate first, then how its palace relates to your Day Stem palace: if it supports you, the money comes your way; if it restrains you, the money does not easily reach you. Then check the gate's strength, Void, pressure and tomb marks, and look at the Wu stem for capital. A chart is not an investment decision.

Wealth in Qi Men Dun Jia: Which Gate to Read, and How

For a money question, Qi Men Dun Jia reads the Life Gate (生门, Sheng Men) first. The Life Gate stands for growth and profit, so it represents the "money" in the matter. Its strength alone is not enough, though. You also need to see how the Life Gate's palace relates to the palace of your Day Stem, which stands for you; that decides whether the money reaches you. Then check whether the gate is Void, pressured or in a tomb, and, when capital or an investment is involved, where the Wu stem sits on the heaven plate. A chart shows the shape of the situation and its leaning. It does not replace a real look at prices, contracts and risk.

Why the Life Gate for money

Each of the eight gates covers a kind of affair. The Open Gate covers career, position and public matters; the Rest Gate covers rest and relationships; the Life Gate covers growth, business and returns. So for "Will this deal make money?" or "How is my money this month?", the key symbol is the Life Gate. The meanings of all eight gates are in the eight gates of Qi Men Dun Jia.

The emphasis shifts with the question. A job or promotion is read from the Open Gate; a partnership compares the two sides' palaces; whether a loan will be repaid also compares your palace with the borrower's, as shown in who needs whom in Qi Men Dun Jia.

Step 1: Find the Life Gate, then find yourself

First find the palace holding the Life Gate, then the palace holding the Day Stem. By default this site takes the Day Stem palace as you and the Hour Stem palace as the other party or the market. When the Day Stem is Jia, use the palace of the stem it hides under; when the Day Stem is lodged on another palace's heaven plate, use that palace. The chart on this site marks the Day and Hour Stems for you.

Step 2: Compare the Life Gate palace with your palace

A strong Life Gate only says there is money in the matter. Whether it is yours depends on how the two palaces' elements relate. The table lists only the three most common cases:

RelationshipCommon reading
Life Gate palace supports your palaceThe money comes your way and is relatively easy to secure
Same elementSteady, with no clear push or obstacle
Life Gate palace restrains your palaceThe money does not easily reach you; with a prosperous Life Gate, often read as plenty of money that is not yours

Other cases, such as your palace restraining the Life Gate palace, depend on the kind of question and cannot be reduced to one line. This step is only the start; the same chart is also read through the school's main lines. The full reading order is in how to read a Qimen chart.

Step 3: Check the state of the Life Gate itself

Once you know where the Life Gate is, check four things:

  • Strength. A prosperous Life Gate means money has force behind it; a resting or confined one means a weak money outlook.
  • Void. A Void Life Gate looks like money but is not grounded yet. When it may become real is covered in timing in Qi Men Dun Jia.
  • Pressure. The Life Gate is Earth. In Kan it restrains its palace (Gate Pressures Palace); in Zhen or Xun the palace restrains it (Palace Restrains Gate). Either way the gate's help is reduced.
  • Tomb. A gate in its tomb has its force locked away, often read as money tied up and hard to get back for now.

Which palaces bring pressure or a tomb for each gate is tabled in the eight gates article.

For capital and investments, add the Wu stem

Among the ten stems, Wu (戊) is usually taken as capital, the money you put in. In business, investment or lending, if your concern is whether the principal is safe, look at which palace holds the heaven-plate Wu and what state that palace is in, as well as at the Life Gate.

One more distinction matters: money already committed and money you are still deciding about are read from different clues in San Yuan Qimen. That belongs to the school's own method; the site's AI reading applies it according to the question, and we do not spell it out here. Saying clearly in your question whether the money is already in or not helps separate which stage the matter is in and avoids applying the wrong reading. See how to ask a Qimen question.

The chart below is calculated live by this site's chart component for 15:00 Beijing time (UTC+8) on 24 October 2026: pillars Bing Wu, Wu Xu, Xin Wei and Bing Shen, Frost Descent, Yin Dun Ju 8 (middle yuan). The question is a teaching assumption: someone asks, "Will the small deal I am negotiating this week make money?" You can also open the same chart in the calculator.

Read in order: the Life Gate is in a prosperous palace and under no restraint, so there is money in the matter; its palace supports yours, the image of money coming your way. On these two layers alone, the leaning is favourable.

This example only shows how to find the Life Gate, find yourself and compare the two palaces. It is not a full reading. In a real question you would also set the chart against reality: the other side's price, the payment terms, how much loss you can bear, none of which a chart shows. The other side or the market (the Hour Stem palace), the main lines and the timing have not been read here, and money already committed would be read differently.

Common mistakes

  • A strong Life Gate means profit. It only means there is money; whether it is yours depends on its relationship with your palace.
  • Treating the Life Gate direction as the answer. Heading toward the Life Gate is a direction choice; whether a deal succeeds is read from relationships on the chart. See the Life Gate direction.
  • Using Qi Men instead of investment research. A chart cannot tell you how far a price will move or how much to buy; real money decisions still need the contract, the numbers and a view of risk.
  • Casting again and again about the same money. If nothing has changed, keep asking about the original chart instead of recasting until you like the answer.

FAQ

Which gate does Qi Men Dun Jia read for money?

Mainly the Life Gate, which covers growth, business and returns. It is then compared with your Day Stem palace to see whether the money reaches you.

Does a strong Life Gate mean I will make money?

Not necessarily. It only shows there is money in the matter. When the Life Gate palace supports your palace, the money comes your way; when it restrains your palace, the money does not easily reach you, and with a prosperous Life Gate it is often read as plenty of money that is not yours.

What does a Void Life Gate mean?

The money looks real but is not grounded yet. The day or month that fills or clashes the Void is often when things turn.

Can Qi Men Dun Jia predict stock prices?

A chart can give a leaning on a specific matter, but not prices or percentage moves, and it is not investment advice. Real buying and selling decisions should rest on public information, financial data and your own risk tolerance.

Which direction should I go for money?

That is a direction question: check which direction the Life Gate falls in at the time you act, and whether it is Void, pressured or in a tomb. See the direction finder.
