The Life Gate (生门, Sheng Men) is the gate most people check when the question is about money. Search for "Life Gate direction" and you will find plenty of fixed answers, but in an hour chart the Life Gate does not sit in one place. It moves every two-hour window, so the direction that holds it in the morning may hold a different gate by mid-afternoon. To say where the Life Gate is, you first have to name the date and the hour.

What the Life Gate is and why its direction moves

The Life Gate belongs to Earth, and its home palace is Gen, the northeast. In the rotating-plate method used on this site, the eight gates turn together with the Chief Gate (值使). Each new hour moves the Chief Gate to another palace and the whole ring of gates shifts with it. "The Life Gate is in the northeast" describes its home, not where it is on a given day.

Using the Life Gate for money and business

Fix the time first, then look for the direction. A Life Gate direction means "going this way during this hour". Decide when you will actually set out or start the meeting, then find that hour in the direction table.

Prefer a direction that matches and is clean. If the destination lies in the Life Gate's direction and the cell has no Void, Gate Pressures Palace or Gate in Tomb, that hour deserves priority. If the direction matches but carries a mark, look for another window on the same day when the Life Gate returns to that direction without one. In the table above, the northeast is clean at 03:00 and again at 11:00.

Do not detour to catch a direction. When the Life Gate is not toward your destination, change the time rather than heading off the other way and doubling back. Traffic, weather, safety and other people's schedules always come first.

The gate is one layer. Three common mistakes

Treating the home palace as today's direction. The Life Gate's home is the northeast, but in a rotating chart it changes palace every hour. Always tie the direction to a specific date and hour.

Reading the gate and ignoring the marks. A Life Gate in the north presses its palace; in the southeast it is restrained and entombed; in a Void direction it has little substance. The gate often returns to the same direction later in the day, so choosing a clean window is usually better than forcing a marked one.

Treating a direction as an outcome. A good Life Gate direction suggests that conditions for going that way at that hour are favourable. It does not decide the deal. Price, contract terms, the other side's budget and your own preparation still settle most of the result.
